Short Info: The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a flagship maternity benefit scheme introduced by the Government of India to promote maternal and child health. This program aims to provide financial assistance to pregnant women and lactating mothers, ensuring better health outcomes for both mothers and infants. Launched in 2017, PMMVY continues to evolve and play a crucial role in empowering women, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, and improving nutritional standards, especially for marginalized communities. In 2025, the scheme remains an essential component of India’s maternal healthcare policies.

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a significant maternity benefit program launched by the Government of India under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women to help them with their nutritional needs during pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood. By providing direct cash transfers, the government aims to improve maternal health and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates across the country.

Key Features of PMMVY

  1. Objective of the Scheme: The primary objective of PMMVY is to provide partial compensation to pregnant and lactating women for the wage loss they experience during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The scheme aims to help these women meet their nutritional needs and take care of their health during this critical period.
  2. Financial Assistance: Under PMMVY, eligible women are provided a maternity benefit of ₹5,000 in two installments for their first child. If the second child is a girl, ₹6,000 is provided in a single installment. This financial assistance aims to support women in improving their health and ensuring better care for the child during the early stages of life.
    • First Installment (₹3,000) is provided upon pregnancy registration.
    • Second Installment (₹2,000) is provided after the child’s birth.
